All together now

13th June 2014

So here’s the first official photograph of the complete London Pride Spinhalers team. Up until yesterday evening, during 10 months of planning and training, the team has never been all together in the same place at the same time.

Last night we had a team meeting running through all the legal requirements of the Race Across America (RAAM). Whilst not laws of the land, they are laws/rules of RAAM and any contravention will lead to time penalties which this team can ill afford to pick up.

For those reading one of our blogs for the first time, we are a four man cycle team (with thirteen support crew) in the 18 - 49 year age group. Determined to cycle 3000 miles from Oceanside California to Annapolis Maryland in about seven days in order to raise funds and awareness for Asthma UK. The team race, and therefore the clock, starts at mid-day local time (Pacific Daylight Time – PDT) and around 20:00 BST tomorrow and keeps running until we cross the finishing line. We will therefore have a minimum of one of the four cyclists on the road 24 hours a day until we cross that line on the other side of the USA.

Manuals have been produced, logistical systems have been formulated and tested but until we get into the ‘race proper’ we’ll never really know if they work.

To sum up the mood of the team I’d use the words, excited, nervous and full of anticipation. Just one more night of normal sleep in a bed before we all grab sleep as and when the opportunity arises.

I’m pleased to report that all of the vehicles and bikes passed the official RAAM inspection which for our team was conducted by John (photographed inspecting one of the bikes) earlier this morning.

As you can see from the photo below the team are using very high ‘spec’ bicycles for the challenge. Nearest the camera is a time trial bike which will be utilised during the day on long, flat stretches of road. Behind that is a road bike which will be used more often, predominantly on climbs and definitely at night.bikes 1

Moving on to the next photo, you’ll probably notice some ‘added extras.’ One of the team has decided a few pink ‘rattlers’ on the spokes, tassels on the handlebars and if you look closely a bell on the handlebars would definitely enhance the look of this bike, if not it’s aerodynamics.

I don’t want to point the finger without any proof, but my $1 would be on Paul Baines being the ‘bling’ artists on this occasion.

Just hours to go before we start the race!!
